Have you noticed the cost of a new lawn mower lately? Are you looking for a budget-friendly alternative to the costly, basic, entry-level lawn mowers offered at your local big box stores?

Consider purchasing a used one! However, before you start, review this helpful buyer's checklist, especially if this is your first time buying a used lawn mower:

  1. When interacting with the seller on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, or Kijiji, try to evaluate their credibility. Do they have positive reviews? A legitimate profile often has a substantial friends list and profile pictures. If not, it's best to avoid!

  2. Does the ad include high-quality pictures of the item for sale? Perhaps even a short video showing it in operation?

  3. Arrange to meet at a mutually agreed location, preferably the seller's home or a neutral public place.

Avoid the potential pitfalls of buying used!

Pro Tip: Before proceeding, check if the engine feels warm. If it does, it may have been recently started, indicating the seller might not be confident in the mower's reliability to start. This is a warning sign!

  1. Ask the seller about the starting procedure for the unit. It's essential that a safety switch, like a blade engagement bar, is engaged before use for operator safety. If this is bypassed, avoid!

  2. Ensure that the unit shuts off correctly when the safety switch is released, which should happen within three seconds!

Depressing the blade engagement bail to start and releasing to stop is a must! Walk away if this feature is non-functional

These are just initial precautions you should consider as a potential buyer when searching for the perfect second-hand lawn mower! Stay tuned for more helpful hints!
